Very often the product design process
concentrates on developing a new visual style for a product, or on adding
extra functionality. This focus can mean that the aspects of the final
product which make it enjoyable and easy to use are neglected. Some new
products, while stylish and with lots of trendy functions can look appealing
but turn out to be frustrating or difficult to use when the customer gets
them home. This leads to dissatisfaction and reduces the likelihood of
a repeat purchase. We can help you design a new product or redesign an
old one so that users will find it easy and satisfying to use. This involves
taking the "customer centred" design approach. Taking a "customer centred"
view of your new product will help to make sure that:
-
The product does what the customer wants, and what he/she expects it to
do.
-
It does this in a way which is obvious and easy for the customer to control.

|
|
 |
It will also increase the satisfaction and enjoyment
which a customer experiences when using the product. Style and functionality
often guide the initial decision to purchase, and bring feelings of anticipation
and enthusiasm. When the product turns out to be easy to use, and designed
to support the customer's needs, these positive feelings are reinforced
and satisfaction is long term. |

 |
We can also help you to evaluate a new design
for ease of use. This is usually best done as an integral part of the design
process. However, if you think you have a "problem product" already in
the marketplace, our ergonomist can help you to understand where the problem
areas lie. |

|
 |
Example product areas:
-
"white" goods (e.g. washing machines)
-
electrical products(e.g. video recorders, answering machines)
-
manuals or other written material
-
tools and DIY equipment
-
kitchen designs
-
software and web sites (see "usability")
